Abstracts and Presenter Bios

Date:  April 25, 2005

Speakers:  Kris Tuck and Kevin Strosnider

Title:   AP Statistics

Presentation Abstract:

This paper is designed to investigate and analyze the advanced placement (AP) statistics examination given to high school students for college level credit.  This paper will cover the AP statistics program and the AP statistics exam.  In this paper, we will look at the how the exam is constructed and graded, as well as what types of statistical areas are covered.  This paper will also review several problems from the AP exam and give the solutions to those problems.  To formulate our paper, we will be using several sources.  These are the 2002 released AP statistics exam, the 2002 AP statistics teacher’s guide, the AP exam website, and the 6th edition of Hogg & Tanis’ Probability and Statistical Inference.  We will use these to look as the same major areas of statistics covered by the AP statistics program and compare them to an average college level statistics book.  We will use these to decide if the AP statistics course and exam is synonymous with the average college level statistics course.

Bios:

-  Kris Tuck is now a senior at Longwood University majoring in Pure Mathematics with a secondary education endorsement, as well as getting his minor in coaching.  Kris has been active in coaching softball at his former high school.

-  Kevin Strosnider is finishing his first of two senior years at Longwood University where he is majoring in Pure Mathematics with a secondary education endorsement.  Kevin is an avid soccer player, fan, and coach and is getting married this summer.

Speakers:  Lindsay Robson and Demetria Wilson

Title:   Actuaries

Presentation Abstract:  Lindsay and Demetria will begin by describing what an Actuary is, what they do, how much they make, the common fields they work in, and how to become an Actuary.  We will then be presenting three (time permitting) of the interesting statistical based problems that are found on an Actuary’s first exam.

Bios:

-  Lindsay Robson is a junior at Longwood University working on a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics with a concentration in Applied Mathematics with a minor in Computer Science.  She is a transfer student from Christopher Newport University and finds college much better here in Farmville.

-  Demetria Wilson is a senior at Longwood University working on a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics with a concentration in Pure Mathematics with Secondary Education.  Next fall she is looking forward to starting her student teaching.

Speakers:  Jennifer Eckrote and Thomas Fields

Title:    A First Look at Fermi-Dirac Statistics

Presentation Abstract:  A brief presentation on the background and ideas behind the Fermi-Dirac distribution for Fermions and how its concept molded modern technology.

Bios:

- Jennifer Eckrote is a second year undergraduate at Longwood University majoring in Physics and Applied Mathematics.

- Thomas Fields is a third year undergraduate at Longwood University majoring in Physics and Applied Mathematics.

Speakers:  Megan Aldrich and Tiffany Timm

Title:   Monte Carlo Simulation

Presentation Abstract:  During our presentation we will be discussing the origin as well as current use of the Monte Carlo Simulation. We will work a problem and discuss what we did as well as our results.

Bios:

Megan Aldrich:  I am a senior level Mathematics major with a Physics minor with expected graduation in May 2005. I am a member of Sigma Sigma Sigms and Pi Mu Epsilon.

Tiffany Timm:  I am a junior Math major with an applied concentration and a computer science minor. I have been the Calculus I and II tutor for Longwood for the past 3 years.

Speakers:  John Burton

Title:   Impacts of Peer Educators on Student Learning

Presentation Abstract:   Previous research indicates that peer educators add an encouraging component to University teaching due to positive personal impact for both peer educator and student.  One general education science course at Longwood (GNED-261 Exploring Science in the World: The Power of Water) implemented peer-teaching assistants in the Fall 2004 semester.  Throughout the semester, these “PTA’s” collected various data concerning the effectiveness of peer educators and their impact on learning.  This presentation will present the results of this data as well as make several conclusions based on the data.

Bios:   John Burton is a junior at Longwood University majoring in Mathematics with an Applied Concentration and a minor in Physics.  He is also a member of the Longwood Honors Program.  After graduation next spring, John hopes to be employed by the NSA.

Date:  April 29, 2005

Speakers:  Jonathan Larson and Brice O’Hara

Title:   Analyzing Basketball Stereotypes

Presentation Abstract:  Our presentation will focus on comparing and contrasting NBA (National Basketball Association) statistics from the past and present.  We will be making some educated hypotheses in reference to basketball stereotypes based on these statistics.  In our presentation we will provide various graphs to be used as means to which aid our fellow colleagues in visualizing the topic.

Bios:

-Jonathan Larson is a junior at Longwood University double majoring in Applied Mathematics and Physics.  He is also a member of the Men’s Basketball team.

-Brice O’Hara:  A junior Math major with an Economics minor is a transfer student from the University of Maryland Baltimore-County.
