Presentation Abstract:  Many faculty, who are excellent researchers, do not view the classroom through the same scholarly lens.  They may be aware of research results and apply the scientific method in their laboratories, but seem to rely on their gut when it comes to the classroom.  Yet there are many opportunities to treat each class as an experiment, assessing what students learn and making changes to the teaching protocol in response to those results.  This presentation will discuss some the tenets of “scientific teaching,” that is, bringing a scientific approach to the teaching and learning of science.  Among the elements of scientific teaching are a focus on student learning, active learning, assessment of student understanding, and incorporation of diversity of all types.  Examples will be drawn from selected National Academies activities and the education research literature.
