MD/DC/VA Section NExT Spring Meeting 2003

Norfolk State University, Norfolk, VA

Our meeting will be held alongside the sectional meeting of the MAA at Norfolk State University in Norfolk, VA on April 11-12. Our schedule allows participants to attend most of the sectional meeting as well as the Project NExT program.

Friday evening, 8:00-9:00
Panel on the Education of and Career Opportunities for Nontraditional Math Majors. (By "Nontraditional" we mean majors that are not planning to teach high school or go to graduate school.)

This session will be in Scott/Dozier Dinning Hall.

Saturday 10:00-10:50 AM
Panel on "Preparing for a Permanent Position". Our three panelists are Dave Carothers (James Madison University), Ann Commito (Frederick Community College) and Eve Torrence (Randolph-Macon College). After each of the panelists share from their experiences concerning professional advancement and/or tenure, we will open the session for your questions. Since this panel is only for the Section Fellows and their mentors, it may not be listed in the regular meeting program.

This session will be in Room 124, Madison Hall.

MD/DC/VA Section NExT Fall Meeting 2002

University of Maryland, College Park, MD

Our meeting will be held alongside the sectional meeting of the MAA at the University of Maryland in College Park, MD on November 1-2. Our schedule allows participants to attend most of the sectional meeting as well as the Project NExT program.

Friday afternoon, 4:30-6:00
Workshop with Dr. David Lay on teaching linear algebra. Prof. Lay is the author of a best-selling textbook on the subject, and was one of the Section's first winners of our teaching award. The session will be in Mathematics Room 1311, on the first floor of the math building.

Saturday at lunch
Pick up your lunch and then come to Room 1311 to meet with other fellows and mentors. (Soon you will hear from us about the mentors in our project, and who your specific mentor is.)

Saturday 2:00-3:00 PM
Workshop with Dr. James Stith of the American Institute of Physics, on challenging our assumptions in teaching. All national and Section NExT fellows are invited. Room 1311.

Additional Session of Interest
A panel for graduate students entitled "Advice for a Successful Job Search" and hosted by Section NExT. It will be on Saturday morning from 9:45-10:45 in Room 1311.
