Course Description: Applied Statistics is an applied statistics course designed to show the student how statistics is used in problem solving, modeling and research. Topics may include measures of central tendency, probability distributions, measures of dispersion, correlation and linear regression, multiple linear regression, one and two-way analysis of variance, bootstrap methods, logistic regression, and simulation. Computer applications will be an integral part of the course. Knowledge of calculus will not be required. Credit will not be given toward the mathematics major. This course counts as 3 semester hour credits. In order to increase the likelihood of success in this course it is recommended that the student attend class without fail, religiously work the homework, read the textbook, focus on understanding the concepts (not just the rote computations), and seek help from the professor and other sources (tutoring, library, textbook CD and/or website, etc.) when needed. Prerequisites: To be in this course you should satisfy at least one of the following items listed below. If you are not sure you meet the prerequisite requirement then please see me as soon as possible.
Professor: Dr. M. Leigh Lunsford. For Dr. Lunsford's office location, phone number, email address, schedule (including office hours), and other general information, go to her homepage: http://www.mathspace.com/Lunsford/ Meeting Time and Location: MATH271-01 - Applied Statistics, TR 2:00-3:15 pm, Ruffner G56 Required Stats Portal: Stats Portal is a web site containing a complete eBook that supports highlighting and note taking, study resources, and your assignments. We will be using the Portal for assigned coursework, so you are required to purchase access to it. You may do this by purchasing a package containing the print text and access code from the bookstore, or you can purchase access to the Portal directly from the publisher at www.portals.bfwpub.com (a preview is available at this site as well). Please be sure to see the Stats Portal Activation Directions before trying to access the Stats Portal. Optional Course Textbook: Introduction to the Practice of Statistics, Sixth Edition, by Moore, McCabe, and Craig. This book should come bundled with an Activation Code for the Stats Portal. Note that Stats Portal includes the complete eBook so it is not required that you purchase a print textbook as well. Stats Portal alone sells for approximately half the price of the print text. The bookstore is, I believe, also selling packages of the print book and Portal access at a significant discount, so make sure you check all of your options before deciding what to purchase. Determination of Course Grade:
Grades will be assigned on a ten point scale (90's A; 80's B; 70's C; 60's D; 50's and below F). Hand-In Homework: Your hand-in homework assignments will be given on the Assignments page of the Stats Portal. These assignments will typically be in a report style format, will be required to be typed, and will usually include graphical and/or numerical output from SPSS. You will be allowed to work in groups of up to three students on your hand-in homework. All quizzes must be pledged. Late hand-in homework will not be accepted, period. Please see the make-up policy below for additional information. In-Class Quizzes: Occasionally a short (15 to 20 minute) quiz will be given in class. These quizzes will be based on your homework assignments and our class discussions. I will try to give at least one class period notice for an in -class quiz (please see the Calendar on the Stats Portal for the latest information on quiz dates). Once a quiz has been given, there will be no make-ups for that quiz, period. All quizzes must be pledged. Please see the make-up policy below for additional information. On-Line Homework: After each class period I will assign homework for you to work on-line using the Stats Portal. The homework will be due before the next class period. Because I will be dropping some of these homework scores, there will be no make-up on-line homework. Class Participation: Your class participation grade will be based on your attendance, your preparedness for class, and your in-class participation. Midterm Exam: A minimum of a one week notice will be given for the midterm exam date although you can expect this test to occur somewhere during the middle of the semester. A make-up exam must be scheduled before the exam date. If the exam has already been given and you have not previously scheduled a make-up, then you will receive a zero on the exam. Please see the make-up policy below. Final Exam: The final exam for this course will be comprehensive. You cannot miss the final - failure to take the final exam will automatically result in an F grade for the course. Please see me as soon as possible if you may have a conflict with the final exam date. Final Exam Date: Wednesday, 29 April, 11:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Honor System: I expect you (and your partner on hand-in homework assignments) to conform to the Longwood University Honor System as contained in the Student Handbook. All material handed in to me (homework, quizzes, tests) must be pledged. Extra Credit: Extra Credit will NOT be given - period. Attendance & Excused Absences: You are expected to attend every class. If you miss classes it will most likely be reflected in your grades (i.e. you will perform poorly). The following college attendance policy will be followed per the Class Attendance section of the Academic Regulations chapter of the Longwood University Undergraduate Catalog: Missing 10% of class meetings may result in a lowering of one letter grade. Missing 25% of class meetings for any reason will result in an automatic “F” for the course. Absences are excused only for college sponsored activities and recognizable emergencies. You must have the proper documentation for an excused absence. Student Health Services can provide documentation only for students hospitalized locally or absent at the direction of Student Health Services personnel. You must also assume full responsibility for all material covered during your absence, including scheduling any make-up quizzes or exams. A grade of "0" will be assigned for all work missed due to unexcused absences. Make-up Policy: Make-up assignments will be given only when the reason for missing the assignment meets the criteria for an excused absence (see above). Except in the case of emergencies, make-up assignments must be turned in before the due date of the assignment being made-up (i.e. you should plan ahead if you know you are going to miss class). As a general rule, you can expect that make-up tests will more difficult than regularly scheduled tests. If you have a recognizable emergency, please contact me as soon as you can to discuss your make-up options. Resources for Students Learning Statistics:
