LSEM100 - Assignments Details Page - Fall 2008
Below are descriptions of possible assignments you will have for Longwood Seminar. I may add assignments to this page during the course of the semester. Next to each assignment is a due date or either the word "Open." You must complete three different "Open" Assignments. Assignments with an open due date may be turned in at any time during the first half of the semester. However, the absolute last day and time on which you can hand in an assignment with an open due date is by noon on Friday, October 17, 2008, by 3:00 p.m.
All assignments should be typed and if the assignment is a review or description of an event you attended, it should include the date of the event. Possible issues to address in event write-ups include: A description of the event. Was the event difficult to find? Was the event fun? Did you learn anything? Did you meet any new people? Did you go alone or with friends? Would you go to a similar event again? Would you recommend similar events to other people Did the activity help you to feel more connected to Longwood? Why, or why not?

"A Review of New Lancer Days" Paper: A no more than one page (typed) paper addressing the questions: What was your overall impression of "New Lancer Days?" Which activities or events were helpful and which were not? If you think "New Lancer Days" could be improved, what would you suggest for how to do so? |

A Description of Two Longwood University Student Club/Organization Meetings: A no more than one page (typed) paper in which you describe each Longwood University Student Club or Organization meeting that you attended. You may not use the same club or organization for both papers. I recommend going to a Math Club, ACM Club, and/or Physics club meeting for one of these meetings. Watch the bulletin boards in the math wing of Ruffner and/or in the Science building for notices of meeting dates. |

"A Job Opportunity in My Major" Paper: A no more than one page (typed) paper discussing a job you could get with your major. You must make an appointment with the folks at the career center to discuss career options (yes, they will tell me if you showed up or not) and cite at least one resource from the Career Center or its website in your paper. I recommend doing this assignment after midterm grades are in just in case you are possibly thinking of changing majors. |

A Review of a Math/CS Colloquium Presentation: A no more than one page (typed) review of the content and presentation style at one of the Math/CS Colloquiums this semester. There are only a limited number of colloquium presentations this semester - plan ahead now for which one you will attend! More information on dates and times for colloquium presentations can be found on the colloquium webpage. |

A Review of a Longwood Sporting Event: A no more than one page (typed) review of a Longwood sporting event that you have attended this semester. |

A Review of a Longwood Cultural, Academic, or Enrichment Event: A no more than one page (typed) review of a Longwood event that you attend this semester that is neither a Math/CS Colloquium nor a sporting event nor a club or organization meeting. Possible events include theatrical and musical performances and art exhibits, as well as programs run by the Office of Multicultural Affairs, the Counseling Center, and other academic departments. Also see this page on the Academic Affairs website about events happening on campus. |

| What Went Right, What Went Wrong Paper: By now you have started receiving feedback from your professors in all of your classes. This may be in the form of quiz or test grades or a grade on a written assignment such as a paper. Take one of these assignments (preferably a math, CS, or physics assignment) and analyze "what went right and what went wrong" for you on this assignment in a no more than one page typed paper. You should ask yourself questions similar to the following: Was I prepared for this assignment? Did I wait too late to start the assignment (if assigned out of class)? Have I gone to the professor for help if I need it? Have I missed any classes? What are some ways I can improve my study habits? | Mid-Term Grade Estimation: A typed document that shows, for each class you are taking, an estimate of what letter grade (A, B, C, D, or F) you think you have in the class so far. | |

Four Year Plan of Study: A typed document showing a four year schedule listing which courses you will take which semester. You must make sure that you have all prerequisites for a course before you can enter it on your schedule. |

A Review of the Movie "Flatland": A no more than two page typed paper reviewing the movie Flatland. You should address at least one of the following topics in your review:

A Day in My Life: Chose a weekday in which you have classes and keep track of everything you do that day in a notebook. You should record the times when you start and end a particular activity (such as eating lunch, IMing friends, time in class, time studying, taking a nap, doing nothing, etc.). |
